A Parent’s Guide to Getting Kids Into Mountain Biking in Whistler

Whistler is one of the best places on earth to learn to ride. Here’s how to get your kids rolling — safely, confidently, and full of stoke.

Why Whistler is the perfect place to learn

From the car-free Valley Trail to gentle green flow trails winding through the forest, Whistler gives young riders a safe, world-class place to fall in love with biking. Add a community that lives and breathes two wheels, and it’s no wonder so many local kids are riding before they can spell “singletrack.”

The trick with kids isn’t pushing them to go fast — it’s helping them feel comfortable and capable so the fun comes naturally. Start small, celebrate the little wins, and let their confidence set the pace.

Getting set up

A great first ride starts with the right gear. You don’t need anything fancy, but a few basics make a big difference:

  • A bike that fits — feet should reach the ground when seated.
  • A properly fitted helmet — snug, level, and done up every time.
  • Flat pedals and grippy shoes — easy to put a foot down when needed.
  • Gloves and water — comfort goes a long way on a warm Whistler day.

Where to start near the village

Begin somewhere flat and forgiving before heading for the trails. The paved Valley Trail and the easy green loops around Lost Lake are perfect for building balance and braking confidence.

When your child is ready to progress, coached sessions take the pressure off you and give them safe, structured skill-building. Our certified Combo Camps coaches do exactly that — meeting every kid at their level and turning nervous first-timers into trail-ready riders.
